What Kind of Glue Is Used for Cutting Boards? (Answered)

Cutting boards are one of the fundamentals in a kitchen. They can be made of multiple materials. Even plastic is sometimes used contrary to how it is not environmentally friendly.

It is, however, recommended that we use wooden cutting boards. These are environmentally friendly as they are bio-degradable. There are many other benefits to using cutting boards that are made from wood as well.

Although, to go into all of that is a topic for another day. Today we will talk about the best glues that we can use in making a cutting board from wood. Not all glues are the same after all.

What kind of glue is used for cutting boards?

Wood cutting glues can be of different types, this is mainly because the different types of wood require different types of glues. In the case of cutting boards of wood would need either the Gorilla wood glue or the Titebond Max. Sometimes Elmer’s glue is also a good option.

There are many different types of glues in the market. However, that’s further from the truth. As not all products are compatible with different types of glues. Here are some of the glues that are used for cutting boards in particular.

Weldbond Wood Glue:

Weldbond glue’s a universal type of glue that will work with almost all types of materials. They are good for plastics just as they are good for wooden materials.

Weldbond is very versatile and we consider this to be one of the best all-rounders. The product will take quite some time to make a complete bond but the bond can be very strong and not easily detached.

Titebond Wood Glue:

Both the Titebond Wood Glue and Gorilla Wood Glue can be similar in their performance as a wooden cutting board glue. However, they are made from two different chemicals.

The Titebond is made from polyurethane. This particular glue is considered to be one of the strongest and most durable among all the types of glue for wooden materials. Glues made from polyurethane can be even applied to the concrete.

Gorilla Wood Glue:

Carpenters trust the Gorilla glue the most among all the others. There’s a good reason behind it too. The adhesive is water resistant and very strong.

It can also dry in a natural color that the woodworkers and DIY enthusiasts prefer. Some of these qualities make for the best type of glue for sticking up two wooden boards to make a cutting board.

Is gorilla glue safe for cutting boards?

Gorilla glue is the type of glue that can work exceptionally well with metal, ceramic, foam, stone, wood, concrete, glass, and many more.

The glue is made from this polyurethane mix, unlike the normal super glues that are available on the market. Those glues are made from cyanoacrylates.

Gorilla glue is exceptionally stronger than the traditional glue and many fear the safety of this product. However, Gorilla glue complies with FDA #CFR21 175.105 for indirect food contact. It is completely safe to use for cutting boards.

Is wood glue safe for cutting boards?

Wood glues can be of different constitutions. They can be used on different surfaces that would require different applications. Not all surfaces can be applied for the same kind of effect.

Therefore, the glues like the Titebond III Ultimate are used for cutting boards as well as the Titebond II Premium. These two types of glue are similar to the Gorilla Wood glue we mentioned earlier.

Thus, we can come to the conclusion that wood glue is safe for cutting boards. They meet the requirements of ASTM D4236 for safe use.

Can you use CA glue on cutting boards?

CA glue is a whole different thing when we compare it with the other wood cutting glues. This one in particular is an very strong and fast-setting adhesive. The glue itself can be available in three different constitutions; thick, medium, and thin.

When CA glue is cured it can become hard, waterproof, and become completely clear. However, there is one bad side to the glue. It is not food safe because of the toxic chemical present in it.

Therefore, we cannot use CA glue on cutting boards.

What is the best glue for a wooden cutting board?

A cutting board is a durable board where we can place different materials that we need for cutting. These boards can be bought from the store, although we could DIY and make some for ourselves right in the garage. That is to say that we need do need to have the right materials and tools for this job.

After going through most of the process of making one for ourselves, we will need to glue together the wood pieces.

In this case, there are many types of glue that we can use but we have to realize that not all the glues are the perfect ones to use along with your cutting board.

Normally the Gorilla Wood Glue is considered the best among the rest for cutting boards. But you might not find this one in particular in your local stores.

So here are other brands of best glues that you could use for a wooden cutting board; Titebond II Premium, Elmer’s E7050, Weldbond Multi-Purpose Adhesive Glue, and Elmer’s E7310 Carpenter’s Wood Glue Max.

How do you glue a broken cutting board?

Imagine you made a DIY wooden cutting board and managed to break it after a few days. Then this step-by-step guide will help you sort that issue.

Sand the sides:

First we need to sand both sides of the cutting board. We need to take big sandpaper and secure it in one place.

After that, we just simply make the place of breaking and just go back and forth. That will smooth out the surface as well as make it flat.

Take broken pieces and clamp them:

We take the two broken pieces and clamp them but we do not tighten them yet. Before Tightening it, we will apply the glue that we have for the wooden cutting boards.

Then after lathering the glue on the sides of the broken pieces, we tighten the clamps.

Let it cure:

After leaving it for 40 mins to cure, we will need to scrape off the glue that is sticking out or slithered out from the applying process.

Sand smoothly:

We leave the board to cure overnight and then use a 320-grit sanding paper to give it a nice smooth surface.

What type of glue is food safe?

When we make wooden kitchen appliances, and if the glue is involved then we do not just use any kind of glue.

We need to have a particular type of glue that is approved in case of being food safe. Below we list a few types of glues that are marked as food safe.

Epoxy Adhesives:

These are glues that can be applied to various elements.

If we were to give some examples, they would be metals, ceramics, concrete, glass, plastic, and wooden materials. These types of adhesives have a very low curing shrinkage.

When this adhesive cures it will possess strong and rigid cross-linked chemical structural bonding applications. Epoxy adhesives are the best that have great resistance to food, cleaning fluids, water, and heat.

Titebond II:

Titebond products are similar to Gorilla glue. They possess similar adhesive effects. However, Gorilla Wood glue is not recommended for any application with direct or indirect food contact.

On the other hand, the Titebond III Ultimate Wood Glue and Titebond II Premium Wood Glue are approved for indirect food contact.

This is in line with the requirements of ASTM D4236. Therefore, this is the glue that we recommend almost always for making cutting boards.

Final Thoughts

We cannot use any type of glue in the case of making cutting boards. There are certain rules that we need to follow to make such products. This is because they are indirectly involved with food materials. Therefore Elmer, Titebond, and Gorilla wood glues are a few of the types of glues we can use.
